Gestational diabetes in Australia indigenous population is an extremely serious problem today.
A recent studies by Australian health practitioners concluded that gestational diabetes in Australia and that of Pacific Islanders were at a much higher risk levels for contracting diabetes than any other Australian people. What’s more, the study stated that indigenous Australian women were three times more susceptible to gestational diabetes, a statistic which alarmed Australian doctors. Doctors attributed the high levels of potential gestational diabetes in Australia indigenous population to numerous factors including family history, diet and obesity and previous diabetes related illnesses.

 


So just what is gestational diabetes? Gestational diabetes is a version of diabetes that can present itself during pregnancy in women who do not have any previous condition of diabetes. Gestational diabetes is usually only prevalent to those pregnant women who have high blood sugar levels.
Gestational diabetes in Australia indigenous population is the result of hormones from the placenta stopping the flow of insulin during pregnancy, a term called insulin resistance. Insulin resistance prevents the mother’s body from using insulin. During pregnancy a mother may need to use up to three times the regular amounts of insulin. Pregnant women require enormous amounts of energy for the cell growth and bodily functions associated with childbirth.

To help combat the growing problems of gestational diabetes in Australia indigenous population, the government health agencies are working hard at increasing awareness and promoting prevention strategies. One such measure is a practical resource kit designed for and distributed throughout the Australian indigenous community.  Another point of interest raised in the information brochure is that Indigenous Australians also suffer the fourth highest rate of type 2 diabetes in the world.
